🍺 Business of the Week: Bezwill Brewing

This week, we sat down with Willem, one half of the duo behind Bezwill Brewing - a hidden gem in Hermanus’ small-batch craft beer scene, rooted in decades of friendship and a shared fascination with the science of beer. And surprisingly, it all started as an inside joke between two school friends.

The name blends “Bez” from Bezuidenhout and “will” from Willem, but it also nods to the Afrikaans phrase “bes wil” - for your own good. Eventually it became their running line: “Drinking a Bezwill is for your own good.”

Turns out, it wasn’t far from the truth.

What began as a homebrewing hobby quickly spiralled into full-blown obsession: recipe formulation, malts, hops, yeast behaviour, microbiology, water chemistry, fermentation… if it involved improving a beer, they dove into it head-first. And through all of it, one principle stayed non-negotiable: Quality above everything.

No shortcuts. No chasing trends. No cheap ingredients. Just beers made with intention, character and deep respect for the craft.

After one of the founders moved to the Western Cape to brew professionally, the duo decided it was time to bring Bezwill to life. Today, they operate as a contract brewery - producing their own recipes at a licensed facility, maintaining their strict processes, and releasing each batch under the Bezwill name.

You can now find Bezwill Brewing in Hermanus:
• On tap at Hopside Down and The Station Bistro
• In cans at Burgundy Restaurant and Perlemoen

They’re currently brewing six styles, with a love for seasonal and limited-release batches that keep things interesting. Recent and upcoming beers include:
• Oktoberfest Märzen
• American Pale Ale
• New England / Hazy IPA
• Belgian Blonde (coming soon)
