A happy accident that led to connection, collaboration and care in Hermanus
This week’s Hermanus Scoop shines a light on a local business built on care, collaboration, and community - Leoni Viljoen Physiotherapy, a practice that has quietly shaped the way Hermanus moves, heals, and lives well for nearly two decades.

👋 Hello Hermanus - a new week and another round of local stories that reflect the heart of our town.
As the year settles into its natural rhythm, Hermanus continues to move at its own steady pace. The days feel a little calmer, routines are back in full swing, and there’s a renewed focus on balance - between work, family, wellbeing and community. It’s in these quieter moments that the true character of the town really shines.
This week, we’re spotlighting stories rooted in care, collaboration and everyday impact. From a local physiotherapy practice built on teamwork and trust, to the people and places that keep Hermanus active and connected, these are the stories that quietly support the way our town lives and moves.
They may be different in nature, but together they highlight something Hermanus does exceptionally well - looking after one another. Through local businesses, shared knowledge and a strong sense of community, it’s this collective care that keeps Hermanus thriving.
In this week’s edition, we’re dishing up:

💚 Business of the week: Leoni Viljoen Physiotherapy
Some businesses grow from a business plan.
Others grow from instinct, timing… and the occasional lost visa.
Leoni Viljoen’s journey into Hermanus is very much the latter.
Born and raised in Bloemfontein, Leoni studied physiotherapy there before heading overseas to build experience, first in Canada, then Scotland, and later with a job offer lined up in Australia. But somewhere between Kenya and Australia, her visa documents went missing. Instead of panic, she saw it as a sign.
Africa it was.
While locuming along the coast and waiting for the visa situation to resolve, Leoni landed in Hermanus and something clicked. In 2006, she opened her practice from rooms at the Marine Hotel, working solo at first. What started as a one-woman operation slowly evolved into something far more intentional: a collaborative physiotherapy team where no one works in isolation.
“I’m not the boss - I’m a colleague.”
That philosophy defines the practice today.
A True Team Approach to Healing. At Leoni Viljoen Physiotherapy, patients don’t just get a physio, they get a team. The therapists work together, share ideas, debate diagnoses, and lean into one another’s strengths to give patients the best possible outcome.
Each team member brings something unique:
Leoni - exceptional at diagnosis, holistic assessment, and seeing the full picture
John William - strong but gentle, with a deep focus on sports rehabilitation
Nicole - dynamic and energetic, with a background in gymnastics and a special interest in upper limb injuries
Elmarie - specialising in women’s health
Deidri - the newest member of the team, bringing fresh energy and curiosity
The practice also incorporates osteopathy, a discipline originating in France. Leoni is trained in both physiotherapy and osteopathy and is actively involved in teaching and training others in this field - another reflection of her belief in shared knowledge rather than silos.
🌊 Life, Balance & Hermanus Favourites
Outside the practice, Leoni lives the Hermanus lifestyle properly.
Her perfect morning?
A sunrise jog followed by a swim, often around Grotto Beach or Kamma Baai, and sometimes at a secret sunrise swim spot where she has the beach entirely to herself. Weekends are reserved for kids’ sport on the sidelines, summer braai’s, and soaking up family time.
And when it comes to eating out, there’s no hesitation:
Lizette’s Kitchen is winner winner chicken dinner.
💙 Why We Love This Business
Leoni Viljoen Physiotherapy isn’t just about treating injuries - it’s about connection, collaboration, and care. It’s a practice built on trust, humility, and the belief that patients do better when practitioners work together.
A happy accident, a missed visa, and nearly two decades later - Hermanus is better for it.
