🍦 Business of the Week: Sugarberry

From the vineyards of Franschhoek to the Karoo and now the seaside streets of Hermanus - meet the Burke family, the team behind Sugarberry, a local ice cream distributor that’s all about bringing great taste and value to our town.

Jonathan and Janine Burke both started out as chefs in Franschhoek before swapping city kitchens for farm life in the Karoo. But they always had their eye on Hermanus - and when the opportunity came up in July 2022 to buy Sugarberry, they jumped at it.

For the past three years, their focus has been simple: to offer Hermanus affordable ice cream options without compromising on flavour. Their best sellers include soft serve mixes - the very same ones you’ll find at many of your favourite beach kiosks around town.

Sugarberry sources its products from the Polar factory in Cape Town and Johannesburg, where new and exciting flavours are always being developed. From ice lollies and stick ice creams to creamy soft serve and tubs in every size, their range has something for everyone.

Jonathan admits that the biggest challenge is convincing customers that ice cream isn’t just for summer. “We’d love people to see it as an all-year treat - enjoy it with a glass of sherry next to the fire, or serve it at a dinner party,” he says.

When they’re not hard at work, you’ll find the Burkes enjoying a beach day at Onrus with their daughters, Annabelle and Katelien - swimming in the lagoon, grabbing lunch at MILK on the Beach, and finishing off with an ice cream from the Oom in the pink kombi.

Keep an eye out for Sugarberry products at your local cafés, beach kiosks, and stores - and taste for yourself why this family business has become a Hermanus favourite.

Spring’s rhythm keeps rolling this week, bringing a little bit of everything Hermanus is famous for - misty mornings, crisp sunshine, and that ever-present ocean breeze. It’s a week that feels like a gentle tug-of-war between lingering chill and early summer promise.

Thursday starts off mild with a few clouds and light rain - just enough to keep the fynbos fresh. By Friday, the sun takes charge, pushing temperatures into the low twenties and setting the tone for a gorgeous weekend ahead. Saturday may flirt with a shower or two, but Sunday looks bright and golden - perfect for beach walks, markets, or a slow scoop of Sugarberry by the sea.
