Business of the week: Dr Christine Kriel Health and Aesthetics
Sometimes the biggest life decisions start with a quiet nudge in the heart.

A few years ago, Dr Christine Kriel and her husband Malan were living what many would call their best life in Cape Town. The mountain views, the ocean, the food, the culture, it ticked all the boxes. But as their family began to grow, so did their desire for something different.
More space.
More support.
More community.
Hermanus had always held a special place in Christine’s heart. With her mom, brother and his family already settled here, the idea of raising their children surrounded by family felt like the right next chapter. What they wanted wasn’t just convenience, it was connection.
The only uncertainty was work.
At the time, Christine was working part-time in clinical trials while slowly building her aesthetics practice after completing her Botox training. Moving meant stepping fully into private practice and backing herself. Thankfully, Malan was already working remotely, which made the leap more possible.
They had always said that if they moved, it had to be a clear, no-brainer decision. They prayed about it and trusted that if it was meant to be, the doors would open.
And they did.
Out of the blue, they were offered the opportunity to rent a home in Voëlklip - a rare find as we all know. Shortly after, a complete stranger (now a dear friend) contacted Christine to ask if she would consider setting up a medical aesthetics practice within a new spa opening in Onrus.

On 10 August 2023, her birthday - Dr Christine Kriel Health and Aesthetics officially opened its doors in collaboration with Onrus Day Spa at the Onrus Trading Post.
Since then, the practice has grown beyond what she imagined.
Christine specialises in Botox, dermal fillers and skin quality treatments, including collagen stimulation therapies. Her philosophy is simple and refreshing: aesthetic medicine is never about changing someone. It’s about listening carefully, understanding individual concerns and helping patients feel confident and comfortable in their own skin.
Alongside aesthetics, she also offers GP services with a holistic approach, IV nutrient therapy and medically guided weight loss programmes. Her focus is always on treating the whole person - not just a symptom.
And outside of the practice?
It’s the small, beautiful Hermanus moments that make it all worthwhile. Running with the pram while their eldest cycles alongside them from Northcliff to grab a coffee and croissant at Black Medicine. Familiar faces. Friendly greetings. That unmistakable small-town warmth.
For Christine and her family, Hermanus has delivered exactly what they were hoping for: community, balance and the space to build something meaningful.
And for the town, it’s a gift to have a doctor who serves not only with clinical expertise, but as a fellow mom, neighbour and friend.

From First Kilometres to Full Routes: Hermanus’s Running Community Is Growing Fast
“It’s been amazing to witness people who couldn’t complete 1km initially now run a full 5km route.”
That simple observation from organisers of Hermanus’s Run for Coffee Club captures something happening across town right now.
More residents are running. Not necessarily faster, but more consistently, and increasingly together.
From early coastal meet-ups in Onrus to beginner training groups, structured athletics clubs and challenging Fernkloof trail runs, organised running in Hermanus has quietly grown into a network of weekly gatherings that cater to almost every level.
And for most participants, it’s about far more than just exercise.
Onrus Run: A Reliable Coastal Start to the Day

One of the most community-driven groups is Onrus Run, which meets every Friday at 6am at Plato in Onrus.
From there, runners head out on a 5km coastal route before returning for coffee together afterwards. The format is intentionally simple and welcoming, allowing runners of all abilities to join. Whether training seriously, getting back into fitness, or just looking for a social start to the morning.
That consistency has helped the group become a regular fixture for many locals.
Run for Coffee Club at Mikro: Accountability Turned Tradition

At Mikro Coffee, the Run for Coffee Club began as a small winter accountability initiative and has since grown into a lively weekly run.
The club welcomes runners from across the fitness spectrum, offering both 3km and 5km options to keep things inclusive. Organisers say the biggest reward has been seeing members gain confidence and endurance over time.
“It’s been amazing to witness people who couldn’t complete 1km initially now run a full 5km route. Some members even go so far as running a 5km before the 5km in order to rack up more miles, while beginners are always very welcome with a 3km route available too.”
Like many Hermanus traditions, the run finishes back at Mikro - with coffee, conversation on the stoop, and a group photo to mark the morning.
Details: Fridays, 6am at Mikro Coffee, 9 Aberdeen Street.
Whalers Athletic Club: The Competitive Pathway
Alongside the newer social groups, Whalers Athletic Club continues to offer a more traditional club environment for runners looking for organised training, official race participation and long-distance goals.
For many local runners, Whalers provides the bridge between casual weekly runs and structured competition, while still maintaining the strong community focus typical of Hermanus clubs.
Trail Tuesday: Taking Running Into the Mountains

For those drawn to trail running, regular Trail Tuesday runs in Fernkloof offer a more technical and scenic alternative.
Starting and finishing at the main lower parking area, the runs typically include multiple distance options. For example:
Long route: roughly 8km with about 350m vertical climb
Medium route: roughly 6km with around 250m elevation
Long-route participants are expected to know the terrain and maintain pace, while medium groups regroup more frequently, keeping the experience accessible while still challenging.
Why Hermanus Is Built for Running
Part of this growth simply comes down to location.
Few towns offer such easy access to coastal paths, mountain trails, quiet suburban loops and scenic routes within minutes of each other. Whether someone wants a relaxed social jog or a demanding mountain climb, the options are readily available.
More Than Just Fitness
Across all these groups, one thing becomes clear: while people often join to improve fitness, they tend to stay because of the routine and the connections that form along the way.
Weekly runs become social anchors. Familiar faces become expected. And what begins as exercise often becomes part of the rhythm of living in Hermanus.

STBB deeply Rooted in Hermanus
Hermanus is known for its natural beauty, strong sense of community and exceptional quality of life. It’s exactly these qualities that led STBB Attorneys to establish a permanent presence in town, proudly calling Hermanus home for the past four years.
Founded over 125 years ago, STBB is a full-service South African law firm with approximately 130 attorneys practicing from 13 offices nationwide. While the firm has grown steadily, its ethos remains unchanged: practical, commercially sound legal advice delivered through close, personal client relationships. The opening of the Hermanus office in May 2022 marked an important milestone and a meaningful investment in the Overberg region.
The Hermanus branch is headed by Tiaan Esterhuyse, an Attorney, Conveyancer and Notary Public with 17 years’ experience in property law and related services. For Tiaan, leading the office is both a professional and personal milestone - practising law in the community he calls home. In 2024, Charne Symington, an Attorney and Conveyancer who began her career with STBB in Cape Town in 2015, joined the Hermanus team.

What sets STBB apart is the combination of national strength and local accessibility. The Hermanus office is not a satellite or referral point - it is a fully operational branch, supported by the firm’s national infrastructure. Clients benefit from a dedicated local team, backed by specialist expertise across the country.
The firm offers a comprehensive range of services including:
Property law and conveyancing
Commercial and corporate law
