💧 Business Of The Week: Flo-Rite Irrigation
This week we sat down with local legend Andre Barnard, owner of Flo-Rite, a business that’s been quietly keeping Hermanus flowing since 1993.
Originally focused on servicing boreholes and wellpoints, Flo-Rite irrigation has grown into a full-service water solutions company. Today, they specialise in everything from borehole pump installations, maintenance and irrigation systems to advanced filtration setups that ensure clean, usable water for homes and gardens.

Andre at his HQ
Operating across the Overstrand - from Betties Bay all the way to Pearly Beach — with Hermanus as their central hub, Flo-Rite has become a trusted name for both residential and small-scale commercial water solutions.

What they offer
Flo-Rite covers the full water journey:
• Borehole drilling and installations
• Wellpoints and irrigation systems
• Municipal water systems for garden irrigation
• Pumps, rainwater tanks, and storage solutions
• Custom-built filtration systems for borehole and municipal water
They run two dedicated teams out in the field handling installations and ongoing servicing, ensuring systems keep running efficiently year-round.
On top of that, they also have a well-stocked retail store where you can find everything from pipes and irrigation equipment to electrical components and filtration systems. They also offer free quotes and consultations, making it easy to get started on any project.

A true Hermanus story
Andre’s story is as local as it gets. He grew up in Hermanus, attending Babbel en Krabbel Pre-Primary, Hermanus Primary School, and Hermanus High School.
After school, he started out as an apprentice plumber before moving into construction and eventually landscaping, where he built his own business. His journey came full circle when he acquired Flo-Rite alongside two partners after the original owner passed away. Last year, Andre bought out his partners and is now the sole owner, continuing to grow the business with a hands-on approach.
Built on community
Beyond business, Andre has a deep connection to Hermanus - especially the ocean. He grew up surfing, bodyboarding, and fishing with his dad, and spent many years volunteering with the National Sea Rescue Institute, giving back to the very community he serves today.
If you’re looking for reliable, local expertise when it comes to water systems - whether it’s drilling a borehole, setting up irrigation, or improving your water quality - Flo-Rite is one of those businesses that’s built on experience, trust, and strong local roots.
🎟️ Tickets for Kalfiefees 2026 Are Now Open
The excitement for Kalfiefees 2026 officially began with the launch of this year’s festival programme. An evening filled with music, celebration, and the unmistakable energy that makes Kalfiefees so special.

Guests were treated to a packed programme preview, with performances from some incredible local artists including Anton Goosen, Luna Paige, Illimar Neitz, the Zwelihle Young Brothers, Hawston’s young rap group Straat Stem, and the beautiful young voices of Laerskool Gansbaai’s Koor Gansies.
One of the evening’s standout moments was the presentation of the honorary Kalfiefees tile to Anton Goosen, recognising his remarkable contribution to Afrikaans music and the arts. Former Overstrand Executive Mayor Nicolette Johnson was also part of the special handover, adding to the significance of the occasion.
With a full programme and many shows expected to sell out quickly - just like in previous years - the launch made one thing clear: Kalfiefees 2026 is going to be one not to miss.

It remains one of Hermanus’s favourite times of the year, bringing together theatre, music, books, art, comedy, and a strong sense of local spirit.
What started as a small arts festival has grown into one of the town’s most loved annual traditions, with both locals and visitors returning year after year. From live performances and exhibitions to book talks, music, and community events, there is always something happening around town during Kalfiefees week.
Whether you’re planning your full festival week or simply looking to see what’s on, now is the perfect time to browse the programme and book your tickets.

💡 Legal piece of the week: Why every property owner in South Africa needs a will.
written by Charné Semington
For many South Africans, owning property is one of life’s most meaningful financial achievements. Whether it’s a family home, a holiday home, or an investment property, property often represents years of hard work and long-term planning. Yet, despite its importance, many property owners overlook a critical step in protecting this asset: drafting a valid will.
Without a will, your property may not be passed on according to your wishes. This can lead to unnecessary delays, added costs, and, in some cases, disputes among family members during an already difficult time.
The Risks of Dying Without a Will
If you pass away without a valid will, your estate is distributed in terms of the Intestate Succession Act. This legislation sets out a fixed formula for how assets are divided among surviving relatives. While this may work in some cases, it often does not reflect the deceased’s personal wishes.
For example, if you own property jointly with a partner but are not legally married, your partner may not automatically inherit your share. Instead, it could pass to other relatives, potentially forcing the sale of the property. Situations like this can create financial strain and emotional tension among loved ones.
Even where heirs do inherit together, disagreements can arise over major property-related decisions such as selling, leasing, or renovating the premises, which further complicates matters and can lead to long-lasting disputes.
Ensuring Your Wishes Are Honoured
A properly drafted will allows you to clearly state who should inherit your property and other assets. Read with a co-ownership agreement, where applicable, it gives you control over your legacy, ensuring that your intentions are respected.
The Importance of Choosing the Right Executor
Another key benefit of having a will is the ability to appoint an executor, someone you trust to manage and finalise your estate. Without a will, the ultimate responsibility to appoint an executor falls to the Master of the High Court.
By nominating a qualified professional, you can help ensure that your estate is administered efficiently, reducing delays and unnecessary expenses while safeguarding the value of your assets for your beneficiaries.
Plan Ahead for Peace of Mind
Putting a will in place is one of the simplest yet most important steps you can take to protect your property and your loved ones. Consult with an experienced estate planning attorney to help you draft a clear, legally sound document tailored to your circumstances.
Careful planning today can prevent uncertainty tomorrow, giving you peace of mind that your legacy will be handled exactly as you intend.
