👓 Business of the Week: Bierman & Malan Optometrists

See Hermanus through new eyes - the story of Bierman & Malan, bringing vision and care to our community.

Liandri Malan, the driving force behind Bierman & Malan Optometrists.

Meet Liandri Malan, the driving force behind Bierman & Malan Optometrists. Since 2019, Liandri has been at the helm of their practices in the Hermanus CBD, Whale Coast Mall, and Gansbaai.

Originally from Bloemfontein, Liandri studied optometry at the University of the Free State before taking her skills across South Africa - and even as far as Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. After time in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs and a stint as a science teacher, she returned to her true calling: eye care. When the opportunity came to take over Lizette Britz’s long-standing practice in Hermanus, she grabbed it with both hands.

Now living in Onrus, Liandri says Hermanus is the perfect place to raise her kids - with trail running, hiking, and surfing right on her doorstep.

She has a special interest in contact lenses, dry eye treatment, and double vision, and works closely with ophthalmologists and pathology teams to support patients post-surgery. She’s also passionate about children’s eye health and offers free eye tests for all kids under 12.

The team at Bierman & Malan

Liandri is quick to credit her success to her team - “all locals from Hermanus” - and says she’s lucky to work alongside such a talented group. With an in-house lab and technician, they’re able to make glasses on site, ensuring quick turnaround times for patients.

In Gansbaai, fellow optometrist Dewald leads the practice. When he’s not looking after patients, you’ll find him competing as part of South Africa’s national rope tug-of-war team!

Bierman & Malan Optometrists is part of the trusted Bierman Group, offering world-class eye care with a local touch. Their HPCSA-registered practitioners provide:

  • Comprehensive eye examinations

  • Driver’s licence screenings

  • Retinal photography

  • Diabetic & glaucoma screenings

  • Contact lens fittings

Alongside their expert care, you’ll find a wide selection of quality spectacles, sunglasses, and frames from top local and international brands. They accept most medical aids, with extra perks like 20% off frames and lenses for Discovery members, plus pensioner discounts and cash packages.

Bierman & Malan Optometrists makes it easy to look after your eyes.

With branches across Hermanus and Gansbaai, Bierman & Malan Optometrists makes it easy to look after your eyes - and look good doing it.

Liandri’s Local Favourites
When she’s not in the practice, Liandri’s favourite eateries are Milk on the Beach, Pear Tree, and Char’d. Her ideal day out includes fishing at Rabie se Poel, hiking through Fernkloof, learning to surf at Kamma Beach, and visiting the Hemel-en-Aarde wine farms.

🍦 New in Town: Sundae

There’s a sweet new spot in Eastcliff - Sundae, the latest venture from the family behind Oskar’s Bakery. This time, it’s a full family affair with Sanmarie, Jako, Ilana, and Lizanne all involved.

On the menu you’ll find creamy gelato, sorbet, frozen yogurt, soft serve, and classic ice cream, along with indulgent waffles, milkshakes, sauces, and toppings to make your treat just right. And yes, they also serve great coffee.

Perfect for a post-beach stop: fill up at Eastcliff Quest and grab a shake or ice cream for the road.
