Business of the week - Appetite Knight: Where Authenticity Meets Appetite

If there’s one word that captures Emilia Knight story, it’s authenticity. The creator behind Appetite Knight, Black Medicine and Hame has turned her global experiences into a duo of delightful Hermanus destinations, each with its own soul, flavour, and story.

Emilia Knight has turned her global experiences into a duo of delightful Hermanus destinations

From Scotland to the South Coast

Emilia’s connection to Hermanus runs deep. “I’ve been coming to Hermanus since 1983,” she says with a smile. After years abroad, studying in Cape Town, travelling through the Middle East, and living in Scotland, she finally returned to South Africa and made Hermanus her home in 2008. “Once you’ve been to Hermanus, Hermanus stays within you.”

Her travels weren’t just about places; they were about flavours. From the warm, spiced kitchens of the Middle East to the smoky whisky rooms of Scotland, Emilia soaked up every sensory experience she could. These influences would later inspire the heart and identity of her local ventures.

The Birth of Appetite Knight

“Appetite Knight” started as a food blog, a play on her surname and her endless appetite for life and good food. It soon evolved into a physical space: the Gallery Café, Hermanus’s first plant-based and vegetarian eatery. “It was about exploring what I loved most, food that connects people and cultures,” she explains.

That same curiosity and creativity led to Black Medicine, a stylish yet down-to-earth coffee and breakfast spot. It has become a staple for locals who crave a perfectly brewed cup and a comforting morning atmosphere.

A Taste of Scotland at Hame

Her most recent creation, Hame, draws directly from her years in Scotland. With a whisky-forward bar and a menu celebrating Scottish flavours, it’s a love letter to a place that helped shape her palate and her purpose. “People often ask who did the décor,” Emilia laughs. “It’s just other people’s junk that ended up in my place, and somehow it worked.”

The result is a space that feels both curated and lived-in, where every object and recipe tells a story of travels, culture, and comfort.

Rooted in Community

For Emilia, running a business in Hermanus is about more than food. “It’s the diversity of the town, the mix of locals and visitors, the sense that everyone’s rooting for each other,” she says. Her businesses also give back in tangible ways, investing in upskilling and providing employment opportunities. “Helping people become a better version of themselves, that’s what it’s really about.”

More Than a Business, A Way of Life

Between the scent of coffee beans, the hum of conversation, and the clink of whisky glasses, Emilia Knight’s world is one built on connection. Each of her spaces, Black Medicine, and Hame, reflects a life lived with openness, curiosity, and an appetite for authenticity.

Because as Emilia reminds us, “We’re all just taking bits and pieces from something and making it our own.”

“Helping people become a better version of themselves, that’s what it’s really about.”

🛥️ New in Town: Wild Waters Charters

The twin-hull catamaran ensures a smooth passage powered by two 140hp outboard motors, perfect for a serene yet powerful ride.

As you cruise, keep an eye out for seals, seabirds, and the occasional dolphin or whale (though Wild Waters is not a registered whale-watching operator, sightings are a delightful bonus).
