📷 Business of the Week: Catalyst 1 Marketing
Turning a Lifelong Passion Into a Business

Bernard Wiehahn, founder of Catalyst 1 Marketing

Some businesses begin around a boardroom table. Others start with a five-year-old kid standing on the side of a rally track with his jaw on the floor.

For Bernard Wiehahn, founder of Catalyst 1 Marketing, it was definitely the latter.

“I think from the moment I could speak, cars were my obsession,” he says.

That obsession found its spark during his first rally in Cape Town, where he watched a Subaru Impreza WRX STI being driven flat out.

“The sound of that iconic boxer engine ignited a deep-rooted love for the automotive world.”

Photograph taken by Catalyst 1 Marketing

Fast forward a few years and that same passion eventually evolved into Catalyst 1 Marketing. An automotive-focused marketing and media agency built around something Bernard understands naturally: cars.

But he didn’t just arrive there through passion alone.

Bernard studied Commercial Photography at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, where he developed a strong interest in automotive content creation. He later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing at Stellenbosch University, bringing creativity and strategy together in a way that made perfect sense.

Today, Catalyst 1 offers photography, videography, website design, graphic design, and paid media management. All focused specifically on the automotive industry.

Rather than trying to be everything for everyone, Bernard chose to build a business around something he genuinely understands and loves.

And that’s probably what makes the difference.

Catalyst 1 wasn’t built around trends or chasing an industry. It was built around something real. A lifelong passion combined with the right skills and experience to back it up.

Because good photography catches people’s attention, but paired with good marketing, it becomes something far more powerful: it tells a story, builds a brand, and creates connection.

For businesses in the automotive world, that combination can be powerful. Understanding not only how something should look, but also how it should connect with people.

And for Bernard, it all comes back to the thing that started it in the first place: a genuine love for the industry.

☀️Hermanus Shines on the Global Stage with Wax London

Hermanus has found itself in the spotlight of international fashion retailer Harrods, thanks to a major new campaign by British menswear brand Wax London, shot almost entirely in and around the Overstrand in January 2026.

The campaign, produced by local creative agency Humaine, now features prominently across Wax London’s global marketing rollout, including the brand’s Instagram channels, editorial campaign content, owned retail stores, and a newly launched Harrods pop-up in Knightsbridge, London.

The campaign imagery and films capture Hermanus’ distinctive coastal textures, open landscapes, tidal pools, cliffs, harbours, and natural light, positioning the town as a striking international fashion backdrop.

Humaine handled the production of the photo and video shoot locally, coordinating locations throughout Hermanus and the surrounding coastline. The resulting visuals now form part of Wax London’s international “Making Waves” and “Fabric in Full Colour” campaigns, alongside in-store installations at Harrods featuring large-format campaign screens and branded displays.

For Hermanus, it marks another moment where the town’s scenery continues to attract global creative attention, not only as a tourism destination, but increasingly as a location for international fashion, film, and lifestyle campaigns.

Shooting Summer content in the Southern Hemisphere helps when the UK is still deep in Winter mode. The variety of locations in Hermanus and the support of the local community in making it happen makes it a pleasure to showcase our beautiful hometown to the world”, said Malherbe Pelser of Humaine, who had previously facilitated similar productions in Hermanus for international brands ASICS and FALKE.

Locations featured includes Grotto Beach, The Old Harbour, Hemel and Aarde Valley as well as various parts of the Cliff Path.

Wax London has grown into one of the UK’s most respected contemporary menswear brands, known for its focus on craftsmanship, texture, and modern British tailoring. The brand currently stocks globally through retailers including Nordstrom and END., while continuing to expand its standalone retail presence.

To view more pieces of the campaign you can do so on Wax London’s Instagram page.

Gold blooms again at Chelsea

Huge congratulations to Leon Kluge and the South African team on winning Gold at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the third consecutive year. Their "Life After Fire" display - built from more than 20 000 protea stems and thousands of burnt branches - recreated a dramatic post-fire fynbos landscape, celebrating the extraordinary diversity of South Africa's floral kingdom. The display also featured the delicate star-like flowers of Rhodohypoxis, native to the high elevations of the Drakensberg.

The project was made possible through the generous support of the Rupert Nature Foundation, the Grootbos Foundation, Hazendal, and Southern Sun - and the good news for locals is that the award-winning display will be coming home. Look out for Stanford in Bloom and Chelsea Flowers in Stanford, running from 12 - 27 September 2026.

Schools

Hermanus Primary U/11 rugby team had the privilege of a special visit from former Springbok coach Jake White earlier in May. He shared valuable insight, discipline and match wisdom with our players during that week. Moments like these inspire, build confidence and remind our young players of the standard we strive for.

🌤️ Weather Forecast for Hermanus

Hermanus settles into a cooler, more typical late-autumn rhythm this week, with mild daytime temperatures, crisp mornings, and a slightly more noticeable chance of rain drifting through at times. It’s not dramatic weather by any means - just a touch moodier and more seasonal.

Thursday starts things off on a bright note, with sunshine breaking through early before cloud gradually builds later in the day. It’s one of the more balanced days of the stretch, with a gentle mix of warmth and freshness.

Friday brings the first real hint of unsettled weather. Light rain moves through during the day, but it’s far from a washout - more of an on-and-off drizzle that softens the skies rather than dominates them.

Saturday recovers nicely, returning to a calmer mix of sun and cloud. Temperatures lift slightly again, making it one of the more pleasant outdoor days of the period.

Sunday dips back into a greyer tone, with cooler conditions and cloud lingering for much of the day. Still, it remains mostly dry and calm.

Into Monday and Tuesday, the pattern steadies. Mild temperatures hold, winds ease off, and conditions remain largely settled with only a slight chance of passing showers.

By midweek, the skies stay mostly overcast, with a consistent run of cool, even conditions. There’s little variation - just a steady, quiet stretch of late-autumn weather.

Overall, it’s a gently shifting late-autumn week - cooler, slightly greyer, and with a bit more rain in the mix, but still calm and very manageable. A good time for slow walks, warm coffees, and catching the sunshine when it appears.
