Mirror, Mirror on the Wall - Who Has the Best Pastéis de Nata of Them All?

If you’ve been wandering the charming streets of Hermanus wondering where to find the perfect Pastéis de Nata - golden, flaky, and gooey on the inside - the search is officially over. At Onshore Eatery on Hope Street, chef-owner Rickey Broekhoven might just have created the best we’ve ever tasted. Do yourself a favour and grab one this week!
Situated at 14 Hope Street, Onshore Eatery is one of Hermanus’s most authentic small-town gems. What started as a humble wood-fired bakery during the uncertainty of lockdown has blossomed into a bustling café and eatery where locals pop in for their morning coffee, a quick business lunch, or their weekly sourdough fix.

Rickey, like so many chefs, found himself out of work during COVID-19. But instead of stepping back, he took a leap forward. “I’ve only ever known cooking since I was 15,” he says. “So, when I lost my job, I decided to challenge myself and build a wood-fired oven from scratch.” That oven - affectionately nicknamed the Mistress because she’s “smoking hot and the only thing that gets me out of bed in the early hours” — soon became the heart of his new venture.
What began as a cheese toasty and pasty joint at the old Tulip spot quickly evolved into something special. The rebrand to Onshore Eatery came naturally - a nod to Rickey’s love for surfing. “When the onshore wind is blowing, you’ll probably find any surfer having a coffee and a toasty rather than watching a wave,” he laughs.
Four years later, Onshore is now the go-to spot for exceptional bread, great coffee, and a warm, unpretentious atmosphere. The menu has expanded, the regulars have grown, and Rickey has even returned to the “big cooking world,” catering weddings and private events while still manning the early-morning bake.

What makes Onshore special is its authenticity - every loaf, pastry, and cup of coffee tells a story of craft, community, and a love for the simple things done right. Whether you’re grabbing a sourdough on the way to work, sitting down for lunch, or treating yourself to one of those heavenly custard tarts, you’ll feel the heartbeat of Hermanus in every bite.

🌊 Activity of the Week: Take an Ice-Cold Plunge
With the swell easing off on Friday and Saturday, this weekend is the perfect chance to slow things down and reset with a refreshing cold plunge. Whether you’re brave enough for the Marine Tidal Pool below the Marine Hotel or prefer the gentler Davies Tidal Pool in Onrus, both spots are ideal for a quick dip, a breath of fresh air, and a natural mood boost. Cold plunges are known to reduce inflammation, sharpen your focus and lift your energy - and honestly, there’s no better place to do it than along our coastline with those views.
See tide schedules below to pick your perfect moment.
Tip: Go early for calm water and the cleanest conditions. Hot coffee afterwards is non-negotiable.
