Business Of The Week:
Overstrand Arts/Kunste - Keeping Music Alive in the Overberg

In a town known for its natural beauty, Overstrand Arts/Kunste (OAK) has quietly become one of Hermanus’ most important cultural custodians - bringing world-class classical music to the heart of the Overberg.
Founded in 2009, OAK was born from a simple but powerful idea: bring music to the people. For many residents - particularly older members of the community - travelling to Cape Town or Stellenbosch for live performances is no longer practical. OAK bridges that gap by making high-quality live music accessible right here at home.
The organisation’s story begins with a piano. After a local councillor successfully lobbied for the purchase of a Yamaha grand piano for the Hermanus Civic Auditorium, the instrument was inaugurated by an international pianist - and a cultural movement began. Today, that same auditorium remains OAK’s home stage, hosting regular performances throughout the year.
Operating as a non-profit, OAK is run by a small, dedicated committee and supported by a loyal base of members and local sponsors. The society typically hosts around one concert per month, creating a consistent rhythm of live music in the town.
But OAK is about more than just performances - it’s about nurturing a cultural ecosystem. The organisation has long supported young and emerging artists, offering them a platform to perform and grow. From sponsoring prizes in national music competitions to helping local students access instruments, exams, and opportunities, OAK plays a quiet yet meaningful role in developing the next generation of talent.
International artists are also no strangers to Hermanus. Over the years, OAK has hosted musicians from across the globe - including performers from Russia, the USA, Switzerland, China, and the UK - bringing a truly global standard of artistry to this coastal town.
Ultimately, OAK exists to create moments: the hush before a performance begins, the resonance of a final note, and the shared experience of live music in a community setting. It’s a reminder that culture doesn’t only belong in big cities - it can thrive wherever people are willing to listen.
Next Event
OAK’s next concert promises to be a standout. An internationally acclaimed violin-and-piano duo - Rupert Marshall-Luck and Peter Cartwright - will take to the stage with a programme that spans continents and styles, from British and South African compositions to the bold, expressive works of Stravinsky and Prokofiev.
Taking place at the Hermanus Civic Auditorium, the recital offers a rare opportunity to experience world-class musicians performing an engaging exploration of 20th-century classical music - right on your doorstep.

🆕 New in Town
Meet Dr Daphne Dürr - Sandbaai's Newest GP
Dr Daphne Dürr has recently opened her general practice in Sandbaai, and her introduction to the community has already been met with a warm welcome.

A graduate of Stellenbosch University (class of 2016), Dr Daphne went on to complete a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the College of Medicine South Africa in 2019. While she has a special interest in women's health, she is passionate about caring for patients of every age - from newborns to grandparents - and describes the privilege of walking alongside families through all seasons of life.
This practice, she says, has long been a calling on her heart. "My hope is that every person who walks through my doors will feel welcomed, valued, seen, and heard," she shares. "Medicine is not only about treating illness - it is about compassion, dignity, and walking alongside people."
On the personal side, Dr Daphne is married to John-William Dürr and the couple are proud parents to two boys, with a baby girl on the way very soon. They are proud Hermanus locals, and you might just spot Dr Daphne doing her morning cold plunge in the ocean before her day begins - her daily moment of gratitude.
To book an appointment or simply say hello, reach out to Dr Daphne Dürr's practice in Sandbaai. We have a feeling she's going to be a wonderful addition to our community. 🌊
Legal Piece of the Week: Protecting Those You Love: What You Need to Know About Curatorship

Director Tiaan Esterhuyse from The Big Small Firm
Understanding curatorship: Is someone you love unable to manage their affairs?
It can be overwhelming and demoralising when someone you love can no longer manage their financial or proprietary affairs due to age, disability, or illness. A curatorship offers a legal avenue to protect their interests and ensure their well-being, giving you peace of mind that their affairs are securely managed.
When is curatorship necessary?
An individual’s ability to make personal, financial, or proprietary decisions may become impaired due to diminished mental capacity. Sometimes, this impairment can be permanent and is caused by intellectual impediments, brain injury, or age-related decline. In other instances, it may be temporary, arising from a stroke or mental illness. While the onset of impairment can be sudden, it often takes a significant incident for loved ones to recognise the extent of decline. Depending on the circumstances, this may necessitate the formal appointment of a curator bonis to administer the estate of an individual who is no longer capable of managing their financial and or proprietary affairs.
What responsibilities does a curator bonis have?
As part of their overarching responsibility to assume control of and administer a patient’s estate, a curator bonis is required to continue or discontinue any business, trade, or undertaking connected to the estate, invest or re-invest funds, utilise resources to maintain, support, or otherwise benefit the patient, and acquire movable or immovable property for the estate’s benefit.
The curatorship application
According to rule 57 of the Uniform Rules of Court, application can be made to the High Court to place an individual, who is incapable of managing their affairs, under curatorship. Generally, this option is adopted in instances where the patient’s age and deteriorating mental faculties – due to dementia or Alzheimer’s - necessitates intervention.
Before the High Court agrees to grant an order declaring the patient incapable of managing their own affairs, application must be made for the appointment of a curator ad litem. Typically, a curator ad litem is an attorney or advocate appointed to represent the interests of the patient during legal proceedings.
This application must contain various information and supporting evidence. In addition to setting out the particulars of the nominated curator ad litem and curator bonis and confirming their willingness to assist, the application must contain certain information about the patient. Crucially, the application must outline the pertinent facts and circumstances, which demonstrate that the patient has diminished capacity and is incapable of managing their own affairs. This application is supported by an affidavit attested to by someone well-known to the patient, along with two medical reports compiled by medical practitioners, including a psychiatrist, who have recently examined them. Critically, the reports must outline the nature and extent of the patient’s condition and how it prevents them from managing their affairs.
When will a court grant the order?
If the court is satisfied with the provided evidence, it will appoint a curator ad litem to interview the patient, comprehensively investigate the matter, and report their findings to the court and the Master of the High Court.
Upon receipt of the curator ad litem’s report, the Master will assess the merits of the application, comment on the suitability of the nominated curator bonis, and compile a separate report with their recommendations.
After evaluating the application and aforementioned reports, the court will then grant the order if it is satisfied that the patient is incapable of managing their affairs and that the nominated curator bonis is suitably qualified. The curator bonis, however, may not administer the patient’s estate until they have been authorised by the Master through letters of curatorship.
At STBB, our attorneys understand the sensitivity of curatorship applications and are here to guide you through every step of the process. Let us help you secure the appropriate support for your loved one when they need it most.

Hermanus shifts into a slightly cooler and more unsettled early autumn pattern this week, with a mix of rain, cloud cover, and brief sunny breaks creating a more changeable coastal rhythm.
Thursday starts warm but with some rain in the mix, before a much wetter Friday sets in- likely the peak of the week’s rainfall. Conditions ease into the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday bringing lighter showers, brighter intervals, and a more balanced coastal feel.
From Monday, the weather settles again into a cooler, calmer pattern. Temperatures dip slightly, with gentle breezes and a mix of sun and cloud.
